Do we look at it? What does it make us want to do? Do we feel close to these children? Both of them? Or do we give one of them priority? What can we tell them?

MONEY … AN INSTRUMENT? A TREASURE? A SEED OF SOLIDARITY???

MONEY …
AN INSTRUMENT? A TREASURE? A SEED OF SOLIDARITY???

Money seems to have acquired more power today than all other instruments: “economic power”. A real strength! Indeed, Pope Francis declared at this beginning of Lent that “money is an INSTRUMENT which prolongs and increases the capacity of human freedom. It allows one to work in the world, to act and bear fruit …”. So let’s use this precious instrument!

But he then added “This instrument can distance man from man if it produces TREASURE that is solely hidden for oneself.” This is indeed the age-old experience of humanity: Treasures rust, are moth-eaten or stolen by thieves!

So the Good News would be to discover that Money can become a SEED OF SOLIDARITY which sprouts, grows and spreads, bearing fruit one hundred-fold:

“When goods, the Pope continued, are not only used for our own necessities, but are offered to others, they may spread and produce unexpected fruit!”

Could the first of these unexpected fruits be for us to experience something of poverty? Indeed, in order to work towards justice and equality, we need to accept sobriety and sharing first of all: “Lent is a fitting time for self-denial, explains the Pope. Let us not forget that real poverty hurts... I distrust a charity that costs nothing and does not hurt!”, but it is “in order to help and enrich others by our own poverty”. Christ himself experienced this reversal in situation as He “became poor so that by his poverty we might become rich...” (2 Cor.8,9.)

It is therefore our responsibility to bring real meaning and scope to economic power, to enable it to bear unexpected fruit! Let’s be “Sowers of Seeds of Solidarity” against economic destitution: we will be able to have small bags of seeds, embroidered by the Santa Maria de Fe Women’s workshop in Nicaragua, at the gathering in Lourdes next May. They will be our real-life symbol of this!
