The long-awaited visitor

Three light knocks at the door. A fleeting moment of suspense while deciding whether to open the door…

Let’s take the time to get settled, feel at ease, present, attentive and relaxed…

Encounter, fraternity, welcome.… Words that echo…

perhaps with identity, relation, distance, discovery, open-mindedness, fear...

In fact, words that tell us a story of doors to be opened, of thresholds to be crossed…or not…

Let them echo some more...with this text, this short phrase from the book of Revelation: :

“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”

Here’s a painting to help us with this resounding echo:

What does this painting by Arcabas, known as “ The Long-Awaited Visitor ” , make us think of?

See PowerPoint slide 1

One house, 2 people, one inside and the other outside.

The person inside is sitting with his arms folded on an invisible table. He takes up almost all of the room in the house.... His space is his house, he is his house.… Actually he wouldn’t be able to stand up…. He is both cramped and squashed, yet he also seems to be safely sheltered in his bubble, protected…

It looks as if in the moments before this scene he had his head resting on his forearms, like someone crying...or like when children concentrate or collect their thoughts.

A lit candle shows that something is waiting in this closed-in space. However a discreet presence can already be seen: the seat where the person is resting is marked with the sign of the cross. This same cross is also used as a chimney, allowing the house to breathe…or perhaps allowing fresh air to come in ?

Someone new arrives from outside, from the other side of the closed door.

Another person is standing on the doorstep, still swept along by the momentum of his arrival. He shines in colours of fire and light. The light actually comes from inside his being, it makes his clothing transparent and lights up this whole part of the painting. In his hand he holds a roll of paper; he is a messenger coming on behalf of someone else. In fact, he looks like an angel (“angelos” - messenger), with wings that he has trouble closing and which are still floating in the wind.

He is the same height as the house. His gaze is clear as he looks above and beyond the door.

Still swept along by the momentum of his arrival, he immediately knocks on the door...not with his fists, but with a bent finger. Three knocks, which are emphasised by 3 clear fire-red dots illustrating the density of the signal…. Three small dots that enter discreetly and directly into the house:  : “ Is there anybody inside ? … ”

Inside, the person seems to raise his head along with his heart, or his understanding: his dual eye means that he can already make out something else that awakens the desire in his heart...that his sense of waiting is echoed in these 3 light knocks at the door. Could it be the arrival of good news? The news that his life needs?...

Three light knocks at the door…like in the theatre before the curtain is lifted. Like an ellipsis…a moment of suspense…suspense while he decides whether to open the door…

Play some music to internalise the images evoked by the painting.

Now, continue to let all of that echo within you…with the help of a few ideas

And for each idea, take some quiet time to plan and write whatever comes to mind.

Slide2

1st situation: I am the person inside the house. If I want, I can even put myself in his shoes, my arms folded on the table….

  • What is my inner state today, at this moment in time ?
  • What expectations do I have? What dreams, desires? What do I need? What am I waiting for ?
  • And if somebody comes knocking at my door, who would it be? What message, what good news would I like him to bring me? ?
  • • So how will I react to the three light knocks at my door ?

Play some background music.

Slide3

2nd situation: the person inside is the entire community at my school, including me… It is taking a break, arms folded on the table.

  • What is the current state of my school, at this moment in time… ?
  • What expectations, dreams, desires do we have? What do we need? What are we waiting for ?
  • • And if somebody comes knocking at the school’s door…what message will they bring? Who would we like to visit us? What good news would we like to receive ?

Play some music while I note whatever comes to mind.

I get up to show that I am coming with all that…and I put it down, and I open it…

So together, as gather up everything that each person has to contribute, we can entrust each other to our Father and entrust the outcome of the Encounter to Him by saying :

I trust in God, our Father

Our Father

Prayer : as a friend speaks to a friend…
