Project 2 - Materials and equipment for the clinic at the neighborhood Nueva Vida

Justification

The health and living conditions at Nueva Vida are precarious for several reasons:

- Poor housing conditions in the neighborhood
- Many families still cook with firewood
- Despite living 10,000 people in the district, Nueva Vida does not have sewerage
- The streets are dirty with and have cumulated water
- Proximity of a poorly managed landfill
- Insufficient public health services
- The drugs are generally expensive in Nicaragua

All these problems require urgent action to effectively improv the following aspects:

- The sanitation of the environment
- Training in personal and family hygiene for the families at Nueva Vida
- The promotion of preventive health
- Services of decent and affordable health care for lower-income population


Description of Activities

1. Basic health care provided at the clinic: A general practitioner already familiar with the area will deliver medical consultations, diagnoses and laboratory testing and prescription of appropriate treatments.
The clinic has a laboratory equipped with the necessary equipment for clinical analysis of biological samples of patients.

2. Promotion of Community and Health Network at Nueva Vida: a network of centers will be created so that they can collaborate and exchange good practices

 

3. Promoting the organization and participating in community health:

  • The starting point is the work that health promoters can do in the neighborhood. It is worth mentioning that some of them have mastered the work with the community health kit (delivered in 2014) in their homes, thus becoming reference points for the community.

 

 

 

Expected Results

- To increase the coverage of health services for the population of Nueva Vida.
- To stimulate preventive health practices based on community participation and health promoters.


Expected impacts

- Four thousand (4000) people will be covered by the project through access to primary care, prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
- Four hundred (400) people will receive training in personal and domestic hygiene.
- Fifty (50) young women and teenagers at Nueva Vida will receive training on sexual and reproductive health.
- Ten (10) health promoters will be strengthened in their role as volunteer leader to promote health in the district of Nueva Vida.
- Five (5) Community kits will be managed.
- Four (4) facilities providing health services in Nueva Vida will initiate formal and productive collaborations.
- One hundred (100) women will receive gynecological /obstetric care.
