"Remote" learning in Ubu...

In Ubu, Nicaragua, on the other side of the world, we're helping youths continue their studies after primary school by providing "remote" teaching, organizing work meetings on a fortnightly basis, offering personalised follow-up of work and promoting an integral education of the person as a whole in order to foster a more humane, more just society.

Support the Secondary Education Project

at the Catholic parochial school "Monseñor Salvador Schlafer" in Ubu Norte, Nicaragua.

The aim of this project is to provide remote secondary education for youths in rural communities, including Cano de Agua, Bilampi, La Sirena, El Negro, El Diamante, Ubu Sur, Las Delicias, Okawas, Calderon, Las Minas, Palsagua, Copalar and Salto Grande, which currently do not have public secondary education schools. The Cristo Rey Parish, with the support of the Company of Mary, has provided this service since 1997. This scientific and, above all, human education is designed to develop a culture of sharing, denounce the unjust causes of poverty and promote education for the men and women of today and tomorrow so that they can become the founders of a fairer, more humane society. The founder is a priest, Rafael Jarquin. Father Fernando Israel Zamora Silva continues this mission today with the Company of Mary.

The remote secondary education project is managed in Ubu Norte, in the offices of the Cristo Rey parish, at the Monseñor Salvador Schlafer Berg Catholic School located in the municipality of Paiwas, in the northern part of the South Atlantic Autonomous Region (R.A.A.S) 449 km from El Rama, a two-hour trip by boat from Bluefields, the region's capital, and 245 km from the city of Managua, the capital of the Republic of Nicaragua.

No roads reach Ubu.The rest of the trip is on foot or on horseback!

The municipality of Paiwas has 31,762 inhabitants. 88% of the population is rural. It is considered an area of severe poverty. It is divided into 33 communities and eight sectors.
The climate is tropical.

The Minister of Education provides only nursery schools and primary schools for the population of these eight sectors. After finishing primary school, young people take up farming activities. Not many of them leave their villages to continue their education in the cities, which are difficult to reach because there are rivers to cross and they are very far from their homes. They have no families to house them and limited financial resources for buying food.

The Monseñor Salvador Schlafer Catholic School in Ubu Norte opened 15 years ago and has had 13 graduating classes. Since 2008, the parish has not received any funding. That is why it has decided to continue the remote secondary education service, which helps reduce costs.

There are currently 93 enrolled students, including 42 men and 51 women, with an average age of 11 to 35 years old. Some of them are already primary school teachers!

With some funding, it will be possible to:
- create a team of teachers, train them in remote teaching, and provide them with decent wages
- improve the cultural and social education of youths during their five years of secondary studies
- set up a student centre with the necessary space and resources for providing proper training of each individual, with a library for individual work. We looked for support from organisations that were willing to collaborate on the parish's educational project, but we did not receive any positive responses.

In order to operate correctly, this educational project requires €5,480 per year. Students contribute to the costs. €1,510 will be required to purchase school materials.
And €3,970 will be required for teachers' wages in 2013.
Total: €10,960
